Water What?

kimThere is a new exercise group at the Bainbridge Aquatic Center.  But you won’t find weights, floats or even much splashing going on.  They move slowly, mindfully, their arms like weightless wings expressing the dynamic energy of their cores.  They rise and fall with their breath, doing some 300 shallow squats in the water in an hour, yet their eyes are peaceful, inward, even meditative.  So what is this lovely class that looks almost like simple dance?

It’s qigong, but in the water!  Qigong (pronounced Chee-Kung) is an umbrella term for the many schools of meditative movement with roots in China, Korea, Vietnam and Japan.  In the United States, one of the best known forms of Qigong is Tai Chi Chuan.  On land, the practice is fast becoming the favorite fare for people dealing with balance and coordination problems, anxiety and depression, even arthritis and rehabilitation joint issues.  Universities like Emory and Tufts have completed extensive research that backs up what practitioners have known for centuries: Qigong is good for you, mind, body and breath.  Scientific research at those universities has shown that qigong can help increase mobility and decrease pain in arthritic knees as well as decrease fall incidents in elderly populations.

At the Aquatic Center, the class is taught by Kim Beyer-Nelson, a certified yoga therapist who has been involved with qigong as well for over 15 years.  She has taught water qigong in both rehabilitation hospital and community settings in Nebraska and Michigan.  A little, different from a similar water-based exercise called Ai Chi, water qigong uses a complex of flows drawn from a variety of classical qigong schools.  The water simple supports and makes these gentle movements possible for those who are overweight, struggling with joint problems, or simply water lovers seeking a way to softly focus their mind and release a lifetime of tension.
