Inclement Weather Procedures

Facility, Program and District-wide closures, or service disruptions are assessed individually and announced with as much notice as possible. The following procedures are followed when weather advisories are issued:

Decision-Making Process for Delays or Closures:

  • Safety First: The safety of staff and patrons is the top priority. Given that a significant portion of our staff lives off-island, decisions may be based on conditions in surrounding areas, not just on Bainbridge Island.
  • Forecast Considerations: When potentially hazardous road conditions are forecast, we will evaluate those conditions to determine whether facility and program schedules need to be adjusted. If feasible, decisions will be made by 5 p.m. the day before.
  • Morning Review (6 a.m.): On the morning of, a final assessment will be made at 6 a.m. to determine if the start time should be further adjusted. This will depend on how much time staff need to report to work and clear snow or ice from parking and walking areas before facilities can safely open to the public.
  • Severe Conditions or Staffing Shortages: If conditions are severe or not enough staff can report, the District may decide to close for the day.
  • Emergency Policy: During full District closures, staff will follow the Emergencies Policy to prepare facilities and program spaces for opening.

How We Determine Conditions:

  • Weather and Road Assessments: The overnight forecast, weather warnings, and road advisories for Bainbridge Island and surrounding areas are reviewed. Given that many staff live off-island, we must ensure roads are safe for both staff and patrons before opening.
  • Ongoing Monitoring: Weather conditions are continuously monitored for both Bainbridge Island and the surrounding areas.
  • Agency Coordination: Decisions from other agencies, including the City of Bainbridge Island, Bainbridge Island School District, Kitsap County, and neighboring cities (Bremerton, Poulsbo, Suquamish, Kingston, etc.), are taken into account.
