Full-Time/Regular Part-Time Positions

Bainbridge Island Swim Club Head Coach

Posting Date: July 21, 2021
Closing Date: Until filled (first review 8/18/2021 @ 5:00 pm PST)
Starting Date: September/October 2021
Division: Recreation – Aquatics
Position Status: Full-time – Salary – Exempt
Hours: Full-time, non-traditional schedule. Requires early mornings, late evenings, including weekends.
Supervisor: Aquatic Program Administrator

About this Position: The Head Swim Coach is responsible for coaching Bainbridge Island Swim Club student-athletes in competitive swimming techniques. This position directs a year-round USA Swimming program that provides a fun, safe, and enjoyable environment while developing teamwork, promoting sportsmanship, and encouraging athletes and coaches to achieve personal development.

This position is unique because it is operated by Bainbridge Island Metropolitan Park & Recreation District which is a standalone public agency that reports to a publicly elected Board of Commissioners and is funded by public tax dollars. The position reports to the Aquatic Program Administrator, who oversees all Bainbridge Island Aquatic Center operations. In addition to being funded by a public agency, this position acts as a liaison to the parent Booster Club. The Booster Club is a separate non-profit entity that supports the team through volunteerism, meet operations, fundraising, and general advocacy for the team.

BISC practices and competes at the Park District’s Aquatic Center which consists of two pools. The Ray Williamson Pool is a six-lane 25-yard pool primarily used by our swim clubs, water polo teams, and recreational fitness swimmers. The Don Nakata Memorial Pool was built in 2001 and includes a 180-foot water slide, lazy river, sloped beach entry, tot pool, water features, toddler frog slide, one and three-meter diving boards, and four 25-yard lap lanes. The facility also houses a spa, steam room, sauna room, and three locker rooms. The Park District is in the planning stages of replacing the Ray Williamson Pool to meet the community’s growing interest in aquatic activities.

BISC is currently a USA Swimming Bronze level club and has shown strong swimmer retention, averaging 135 members and an ever-growing waitlist. Our coaching staff currently consists of the Head Swim Coach, two part-time assistant coaches, and 1-2 volunteer coaches. Our aquatics team prides itself on a culture of safety not only for our lifeguard and swim instructor staff but also for our clubs and teams. BISC practices safety as a cornerstone by implementing the best training practices and has achieved a team level Safe Sport certification. Please note that both assistant coaches will continue to be employed going forward.

Our team is looking for the next Head Swim Coach to continue our trend of excellence by promoting high-level swimming and helping our athletes learn good values and skills that they can carry forward. The Head Swim Coach will be part of the robust and committed Aquatic Center staff that serves an island community that loves the water. If you have the drive to help our young athletes grow into strong, confident, courteous, and community-centered swimmers, we are looking for you!

Duties: Organize and lead a dedicated group of assistant swim coaches and school aged youth to meet their goals. Oversee and maintain BISC’s good standing with USA Swimming, Pacific Northwest Swimming, the Park District, and the Bainbridge Island community. Maintain BISC’s Safe Sport certification and USA Swim Club recognition program. Manage BISC’s Team Unify site with the help of billing personnel. Work as part of the Aquatic Center staff to ensure that safety is a high priority for all athletes and staff. Please read the full job description on the Park District’s employment webpage (www.biparks.org).

Qualifications: Minimum of 5 years of coaching experience with a leadership role. Bachelor’s degree or equivalent with comparable knowledge and abilities. Current CPR, AED and First Aid Certification, USA Swim Coach, Safe Sport and ASCA certifications.

Compensation and benefits: Paid staff training, orientation, and discount on most Park District classes. Participation in the State Retirement Program, health benefits, long-term disability, and life insurance. Vacation and sick leave accrual. 40 hours administrative leave and 16 hours paid time off in addition to holidays annually.

12 step salary scale starting at $51,996 up to $79,892. Starting wage DOE and certifications.
