The Park District has initiated a system-wide accessibility assessment of all parks and facilities. A plan will emerge with public input that guides and prioritizes future improvements.
The process ahead will identify physical and programmatic barriers to access, along with remedies such as handicap-accessible doorways and programs that maximize participation for all. Beginning in the Spring of 2025 and through 2026, a third-party expert consultant team will report to the community the conditions, needed corrections, and cost estimates, resulting in a systematic approach to implementing accessibility improvements.
The Park District is committed to providing welcoming services to all residents, above and beyond compliance with state and federal guidelines and the law. The “Transition Plan,” now under development, will guide the Park District’s policies, approaches, and investments toward this goal.
