On February 13, 2025, we honored Chuck Field, former Director of the Bainbridge Island Metro Park & Recreation District, for his instrumental role in preserving the Grand Forest. Chuck’s foresight, dedication, and determination were key in securing the land from the DNR, ensuring that the Grand Forest remains a legacy for everyone to enjoy. In recognition of his contributions, the main loop trail in Grand Forest East has been named the “Chuck Field Memorial Loop Trail.”
Chuck worked alongside the Bainbridge Island School District to acquire a section of land that would become part of the Grand Forest. Recognizing the threat to the remaining 240 acres, he spearheaded a grassroots campaign to protect the area as public space. This led to the formation of the “Committee to Save the DNR Forest,” on September 17, 1991, the community voted to pass a $5 million bond to purchase the land. Chuck also secured a $1 million state grant to help reduce the project’s financial burden.
In 1992, a contest was held to rename the newly acquired property, and “Grand Forest” was chosen. For Chuck, the successful acquisition of the DNR forest was a crowning achievement, and his vision ensured that the Grand Forest would remain a public resource for future generations.
The Chuck Field Memorial Loop Trail pays tribute to his lasting impact on Bainbridge Island, reminding all who visit of his commitment to conservation and the preservation of the island’s natural beauty.
