On May 23, District staff, commissioners, the Friends of Fort Ward, and a select group of Naval Cryptological Veterans gathered for a moving memorial rededication ceremony marking the placement of interpretive signage at two historic sites: Battle Point Park and Fort Ward Parade Grounds. The new signs tell the story of the Naval Cryptologic Veterans Association and the service members who worked at the Battle Point and Fort Ward communications stations during and after World War II. It was a privilege to speak at this event and help preserve an important chapter in our island’s history.
We’re also thrilled to announce the successful acquisition and permanent protection of 39 acres of forestland, keeping the Grand Forest East fully intact. This incredible milestone was made possible through a collaborative effort with the Bainbridge Island Parks & Trails Foundation, and the Bainbridge Island Land Trust. The community support for the campaign led by the Bainbridge Island Land Trust was impressive and finalized by a very large and generous donation acquired through the Park Foundation. The purchase was finalized on June 3, 2025, ensuring this cherished landscape is preserved for generations to come.
Looking ahead, Phase 1 of the Ray Williamson Pool Rehabilitation is nearly complete, and we’re pleased with the pace and quality of the work. Permits for Phase 2 have been submitted to the City, and we expect to open bidding this fall. If all goes as planned, the pool will reopen in mid-July, with Phase 2 closure for construction scheduled in spring 2026.
At its May 15 meeting, the Park Board adopted recommendations from a community advisory committee to honor Terry Lande, the Park Districts previous executive director, following his retirement. The new Park District administrative building has been named the Lande Administration Building, and the summer concert series is now called Terry’s Sounds of Summer in recognition of his 22 years of service.
As summer begins, our camps and seasonal programs are just getting underway, and we’re looking forward to a season full of learning, laughter, and community connection. Be sure to wave when you see us at the Grand Old 4th Parade and come say hello at the Terry’s Sounds of Summer kick-off on July 9.
