On a recent sunny afternoon at Rotary Park, Park District staff gathered in gratitude for the incredible 2024 volunteers at the (rescheduled) Staff & Volunteer Appreciation Event. It was a summer kickoff and a heartfelt thank you to those who helped make our programs possible.
Volunteers are essential to the Bainbridge Island Metro Park & Recreation District, helping maintain trails, supporting youth programs, and protecting our natural spaces. Their time and talents help keep well over forty miles of trails open, parks clean, and special events running smoothly.
One standout is Cindy Ruggiero, a 20-year volunteer with Bainbridge Aquatic Masters (BAM). Jenette Reneau, Aquatic Program Administrator, shares, “Cindy Ruggiero has been an active member of BAM for 20 years and contributes to the friendly and caring team environment in multiple ways. Cindy has volunteered to be the Safety Marshall as well as the host at every BAMFest Swim Meet since 2010! Furthermore, through Cindy’s encouragement, not only does she regularly take on the United States Masters Fitness Challenges, but she recruits fellow teammates to join her in furthering their skills.”
Structured groups, such as the Trails Committee and Moritani Advisory Committee, also rely on volunteers to guide park planning and restoration. These efforts ensure that the island’s natural beauty and public spaces are well-maintained, with decisions informed by local voices.
There are many ways to volunteer with the Park District, whether you enjoy working outdoors, supporting events, or connecting with community members. Volunteers help maintain and restore trails and natural areas, remove invasive species, plant native vegetation, and care for historic gardens. Others assist with themed youth camps and sports, coach teams, or lend their skills to special interest programs. Event volunteers play key roles in community celebrations, such as Terry’s Sounds of Summer and Haunted Hayride, while committee members provide valuable guidance on trail planning and park stewardship. Regardless of your interests or experience, there’s a meaningful way to get involved and make a difference.
